Up One

Famous Friends

Thank goodness! I thought you'd never get back.

Hi, sweetie. What have you been doing all day?

That's what I'm thinkin'.

I was out looking for a job. No luck yet, but I'm
sure something will come up. Bein' a new face in
town, seems folks are slow to trust ya, huh?

I wouldn't really know. All I know is these two
doorposts who call themselves human and insist
on living here with me. Not that they even really
know how to live. They stink up an otherwise
pleasant abode and piss their lives away. I wouldn't
trust those two as far as I can spit. Not that I can spit.

Well, no matter. I just moved here from
Savannah, Georgia. Back home, people got
a different way of showing hospitality, that's for
sure.

Around here, I don't think hospitality is in
any of the dictionaries. Even back when I
was a real person, I always felt there must be
a better way of life somewhere else, friends who
stood by you no matter the weather, brothers and
sisters even without blood ties, a place where
hospitality is a way of life.

I'm starting to think there's just no place like home.

That makes two of us.

If I click my heels three times and say it over and
over, do you think maybe they'd bring Georgia
here to see me now?

I sincerely doubt it, my dear, but I'd love to see
you try.

My goodness! Look at my manners. All these
northern folks are so cold, I forgot my basic
sense. Pleased to make your acquaintance, my
little prince. My name is Tara.

Call me a prince again and you run the risk of
having a friend who will not leave your side. Ever.
How about I just call you Savannah? Has a nicer
ring to it. Tara's too, I don't know, too obvious,
too heavy handed. These days, I'm all about
a light touch Anyway, I couldn't possibly express
how delighted I am to meet you in return,
Savannah. Not in a million years.
